What is Kanamycin?
Kanamycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic, available in both oral and intravenous forms, and used to treat a wide variety of infections. It is generally administered before bowel surgery to prevent a bacterial infection from developing in the intestines.
Kanamycin works by affecting an unknown aspect of translocation (part of the translation process in which the mRNA is shifted one codon in relation to the ribosome), and by causing messenger RNA (mRNA) to be misread by the ribosome, causing a lethal level of translational errors.
Kanamycin is marketed under the brand name Kantrex®.
